Over a hundred of them are registered here and in the vicinity of Harran. The windowless cones are built as the ony way to achieve a roof without scarce timber, and the shape is so dictated by the only material to hand in abundance - mud. The high dome collects the hotter air and the temperature inside is said to remain within liveable ranges in the extrems of both summer and winter. The mud withstands minor earthquakes and wind pressure, and sudden rainfall runs off the steep roof before the mud brick can absorb it.
