Lake Batur is in a caldera formed by previous volcanic activity in this area. Fishing has been a traditional mainstay of the villages around the lake and as well as the traditional fishing from canoes, fish farms have sprung up around the edge of the lake as locals try to find ways of making a living in their villages instead of going to work in Denpasar or on Kuta beach.
Mount Batur on the western rim of the caldera is still an active volcano and is popular with tourists for trekking and the hot pools. Unfortunately the ongoing volcanic activity sometimes raises the sulfur levels in the lake , turning the lake a beautiful azure colour but fatal to the fish in the lake, including the fish farms.
