The airport continues to be important to the city for regional and short-distance domestic flights - and also has some longer flights in the 1000 - 1500 mile range, such as to Belem, and Manaus. Even with the construction of Guarulhos International Airport (35 km away from the city's downtown), Congonhas airport continues to face the problem of congestion both for the number of passengers and the number of flights. Viracopos Airport in Campinas formerly was served by international passenger flights until 1985 and is still has significant cargo traffic and some passenger traffic.
Its halls are considered one of the more outstanding examples of modern architecture in São Paulo.
Congonhas is the main hub of the largest airlines in Brazil: TAM Linhas Aéreas, Gol Transportes Aéreos and Varig.
The airport has been troubled by slippery runways and has had several accidents where water accumulation has been a significant factor (most noticeably, the one involving Flight 3054 of TAM Linhas Aéreas in July of 2007), although the main runway was repaved in June 2007. This runway needs to be grooved to drain rainwater, work which is set to begin in August, 2007.
In consequence of the TAM 3054 incident, the airport is set to have its operations significant altered, through the reduction of runway slots, and the restriction of flights only to those to Santos Dumont Airport and regional flights. This would reduce the gross weight of landing aircraft, increasing safety margins. To compensate for the traffic, a third commercial airport will be built in a yet-undecided location in São Paulo.-->
